ALBANESE, (Egide-Joseph-Ignace-) Antoine

(b. 1729) (d. 1800) (Years in Paris: 1747-1800) Italian. Singer (Soprano Castrato) and Composer.

I. Biographical Survey

Antoine Albanese was an Italian castrato who trained in Naples before he moved to Paris in 1747. He was a performer in the Concert Spirituel from 1752 and worked in the Chapelle Royale of Louis XV, from which he retired in 1774. His compositions are primarily vocal works.

II. Time in Paris

Albanese moved to Paris from Italy when he was eighteen years old at the behest of Paul-César Gibert, who recruited him for the Chapelle Royale. Gibert had studied in Naples himself, and he used his connections to recruit Italian singers for Louis XV’s court. From 1752 until 1762 Albanese was a popular singer at the Concert Spirituel. He performed in the Parisian premier of Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s Stabat mater (with Pierre Dota) in 1753 and in a second performance of the work in 1754 (with Gaetano Guadagni). Albanese retired from public performance around 1764, but he continued to work for the Chapelle Royale until 1774. He composed airs, chamber music, and two lyric scenes which were performed by the Petits Comédiens du Bois de Boulogne in 1778 and 1779.
